Native Texan Jim Gough never
had just one job in his long and colorful career.
At one time or another Jim's been a newspaper
cartoonist, display man, disc jockey, advertising art
director, jingle producer, copy-writer producer,
free-lance voice talent, TV show host, talk show host,
movie character actor and professional musician/band
leader. Much of the time he performed all these duties
simultaneously.
Jim was raised and educated in Austin, Texas. Attended
the
University of Texas and studied Advertising Design
at the Los Angeles Art Center. He served in the
U.S. Navy
as an enlisted journalist during the early '50's. Also
while in the Navy, Jim built and managed an
Armed Forces Radio affiliate in the Philippine
islands.
Returning from military service, Gough married a
talented pianist, Gail Williams and they made Dallas
their home while entertaining at various country clubs
in the area. It was in Dallas that Jim's career as an
artist-designer began. He worked as an art director for
several major regional agencies and eventually started
his own advertising business in Houston in 1970. During
these years, Jim traveled to major cities around the
country voicing commercials for various products and
services.
Since retiring from the ad business in the late '90's
Jim has concentrated on voice work and narrating
audiobooks. His radio and TV commercials have won many
awards over the years and Jim is still in demand to
voice spots today. He's narrated over fifty "Western"
audiobooks by leading authors such as
Ralph Compton,
Matt
Braun,
Max Brand and the legendary
Zane Grey.
Jim's radio series on Texas history, "Today in Texas"
has been featured on radio stations throughout the state
for years. The series was recognized as the best
documentary radio program of 1993 in a national
competition. Gough has written and hosted a series of TV
reports called, "Rodeo Roundup" for Houston's Paramount
20 TV station and his series, "True Tales of Texas"
aired on Houston's
KNWS-TV
51. In '94 and '95, Jim hosted a regular weekend
radio program, "Texas USA" on the
Texas
State Network.
Jim has been heard on the airwaves lately doing
commercials for
The Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo,
The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and the
San
Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. He's voiced spots for
Wolf Brand Chili,
Gilley's Nightclub in Dallas and
KFC
restaurants in the Houston area. Gough has always
remained active in his music. He's entertained with his
Western Swing Band, "The Cosmopolitan Cowboys" for years
and was a 1999 inductee in the Sacramento, California
Western Swing Hall of Fame.
Jim and his wife Gail reside in the little Hill Country
town of
Liberty Hill, Texas.
