Gallivantin' with Gough - Summer, 2010
As hard as it is
to believe, Summer of 2010 has arrived. It’s been very
busy at the Gough’s little ‘Rancho-Notso-Grande” since
my last report.
We started off doing an on-camera TV spot for the Valero
Texas Open on the coldest day of the year in San Antonio
in early December. Had to walk all over a new golf
course in 26 degree weather. Think that wind wasn’t cold
riding in a golf cart? The spot turned out well and has
played in the San Antonio market to promote the annual
golf tournament. We also did several radio spots for the
tournament as well.
I have begun my third year as radio and TV spokesman for
Texas Title and Payday Loans. The new spots are playing
in all Texas markets. I have also begun my fourth year
as spokesman for Golden Chick Restaurants in Central
Texas. We recently recorded a package of radio and TV
spots that will air in the Spring/Summer.
I narrated a documentary TV show called “The Re-enactors
of San Jacinto” for my friend, Houston producer Allen
Morris. The show played on Houston’s PBS station and has
been entered in a contest for the Emmys this year. I
also narrated a TV piece about the City of Galveston for
Allen as well.
We were pleased to have a couple of candidates who won
their primary elections in the Austin area. We were
selected to do radio spots for Texas Power and Light
that will air in Houston this year.
It doesn’t seem possible, but our Internet radio show
“Bob Wills Radio” on
www.bobwills.com has almost completed it’s first
year of broadcasting 24/7. The programs are all archived
so you don’t have to miss any of the interviews. We were
honored to have important Western Swing musicians such
as Floyd Domino, Cindy Cashdollar, Ray Benson and many
more as our guests. We continue to record these programs
at Austin’s famous Broken Spoke Dancehall.
We began doing voice-overs for another internet show,
www.ncharadio.com also this past Summer. The
‘station’ is aired especially for cutting horse
aficionados and is produced by Billy Thorman of Fort
Worth, Texas. We are also the ‘voice’ of radio stations
KULP of El Campo and KBEY of Marble Falls.
Gail’s trio has played many a gig since the year began
at Austin’s retirement communities. We even did two
“Cowboy” programs this Spring. We had a wonderful
reunion with one of our musician friends from the Denver
area. Tom Neyland, Espiscopal Minister and jazz piano
player, came to our place with his wife for a great
visit in April. Tom played in the Jimmy Gough Quintet in
1957. We had great visit with our old bass player and
longtime friend Pete Reynolds and his family in Plano,
Texas recently.
We also reunited with another musician friend who lives
near San Francisco. Gardner Bride, former Navy pilot and
jazz trumpet player also played in the Jimmy Gough
Quintet. Gardner escorted Gail and me on a tour of one
of my old ships..the USS Hornet. This is the famous ship
that Jimmy Doolittle’s B-25’s took off from to bomb
Japan in WWII. Gardner flew in an air-group on the
Hornet in 1954. I was on a training cruise on the old
carrier in 1956.
We were honored to be inducted into my fifth Western
Swing Hall of Fame, The Western Swing Music Society of
the Southwest on July 10th. 2010 is stacking up to be a
busy one, and that’s the way I like it. Until next time,
that’s all the news from Liberty Hill, Texas. Happy
Trails.
